What provenance means for AI-assisted legal work

Provenance is the record of what information informed an AI-assisted output, what changed and who approved the result.

AI-assisted legal work creates a recordkeeping question before it creates a model question. When a draft changes hands, a reviewer needs to know what material informed it and whether the material was current.

Provenance can capture the documents supplied to the workflow, the instruction used, the changes made during review and the person who approved the final form. The record need not preserve every interaction. It needs to preserve enough context to explain why a particular output was relied on.

The limit is clear. A complete provenance record can show that a workflow followed its path while still revealing that the wrong source document was supplied. That is why provenance belongs with document controls and review boundaries, not in place of them.
